Lansdowne YMCA Marlins

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the  Lansdowne YMCA Competitive Swim program has pivoted and will be providing 4 week training clinics. Each clinic will be focused on developing the best combination of competitive swimmers and people through the strengths of innovative coaching techniques and strategies, supportive parental involvement for youth and integration of the core values of the YMCA – Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

General Information

Swimmers are NOT permitted to attend practice if…

  • They are showing any of the symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms include: a fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, or other symptoms listed by the CDC or unusual for the swimmer.
  • They think they could have COVID-19.
  • They have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • They are awaiting the results of testing for COVID-19.
  • They have been in close contact with anyone in the 4 categories above, especially family members.

Swimmers must come to practice with…

  • A face mask on at all times. Masks can be taken off just prior to entering the water and put back on immediately upon exiting the water.
  • Wearing a swimsuit
  • Pre-showered at home
  • Using the restroom before hand

Wait at the Entrance for Screening –Swimmers will be screened at the main entrance for Ridley Y and the parking lot entrance at Lansdowne Y. From there they will enter and proceed to their assigned lanes. Strict start and end times will be enforced so proper cleaning in between sessions can be completed.

  1. Enter and go to Assigned Lane -Each swimmer will be pre-assigned a lane number, with a maximum of 2 swimmers per lane starting on opposite ends of the pool. Lanes will be marked with numbered cones.
  2. Set Down Items –Put any items brought into the facility (such as towel, clothes, shoes, or gear) in the designated space. Each swimmer will have a space for their lane to ensure social distancing at all times. After practices, it is the athlete’s responsibility to disinfect any item set down at the facility.
  3. Swim Practice -Swim practices will have at least 1 coach and 2 lifeguards on deck.

Coaches will be wearing masks at all times, and the practice and pace clock will also be displayed so swimmers can easily follow along.

  1. Dry off & Retrieve Items -Swimmers will dry off on the pool deck. The locker rooms will be closed. Swimmers will not be permitted to shower or change on site. Swimmers must gather their belongings and exit the building immediately after practice ends. Note: USA Swimming rules prohibit deck changing. Swimmers need to plan to arrive and leave in their swimsuits.
  2. Exit using the appropriate door and go to car
  3. Pick up in – parking lot

Mask/Face Coverings While Inside the YMCA

  • Swimmers are required to wear a mask to enter the Y and travel through the common areas (like hallways, locker rooms and the pool deck).
  • Swimmers are now required to wear a mask while on the pool deck and to/from restrooms. Masks may be removed prior to entering the water.
  • Swimmers are asked to arrive and leave the pool in their bathing suits.

 We understand that you may not agree with these new measures. However, as a YMCA we have no choice but to follow the orders mandated by the Secretary of Health or shut the Y down again. None of us want that!

YMCA Staff are currently required to wear masks at all times.

Everyone entering the Y will be temperature checked upon arrival. Should the temperature reading be above 100.4 or if you are showing any signs of illness, you will not be permitted to enter the Y. For everyone's health and safety, we cannot make exceptions, and we thank you in advance for not asking our staff to do so.

Everyone will be asked the following questions:

  • Since your last visit here, have you had any of these symptoms that is not attributable to another condition?  
    • Cough  
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing  
    •  Or at least two of these symptoms
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Repeated shaking with chills
    • Muscle pain
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Any symptom out of the ordinary for you  
  • Have you traveled to any states or countries that have high levels of COVID cases, or been in close contact with anyone who has traveled to those areas within the last 14 days?  
  • Have you had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days? 

Everyone will be monitored throughout the day for signs of illness. Should there be a concern, the individual will be asked to leave the Y immediately.

Swimmers are NOT permitted to attend practice if they answer YES to any of the following questions…

  • Do you or do any of the swimmers you are dropping off have a fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell, chills, muscle aches, or headache?
  • Have you or any of the swimmers you are dropping off had any of these symptoms since last time you were last here? Been in contact with anyone with fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell, chills, muscle aches, or headache since the last time you were here?
  • Have you or any of the swimmers you are dropping off potentially been exposed to COVID-19 or have reason to believe you/they have COVID-19?
  • Have you traveled to any states or countries that have high levels of COVID-19 cases in the last 14 days?
    • US State restrictions include: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas.  List updated as of 8/21/20
    • Adults must fill out the pre-screening health form prior to 2pm on the day of practice.  No exceptions. LY Forms are located here .  RY Forms are located here

Swimmers who are sick or believe they might have COVID-19 should stay home until you can answer YES to the following questions…

  • Has it been at least 10 days since you first had symptoms?
  • Have you been without fever for 3 days (72 hours) without any medicine?
  • Has it been 3 days (72 hours) since your symptoms have improved?

Practice sessions are set up in stable groups so that contact tracing can be accomplished should a swimmer become sick with COVID 19.  For this reason, athletes will not be able to make up missed practice sessions.

NO - Sharing of equipment will not be allowed.

No, swimmers will need to take their equipment home with them after each session.


Carpooling is a decision you have to make.

We highly discourage carpooling, however, if you choose to do so, adhere to social distancing standards

Parents and/or spectators will not be permitted to wait in the Y at this time. Parents who are waiting outside are asked to maintain best practices for safety.

Travel outside of PA is discouraged, however this will not eliminate your child’s participation in practice if they do so, unless you travel to a state on the PA Restrictions list.

PA travel restrictions and quarantine upon return will be enforced for any athlete choosing to travel during this time.

Athletes 12 and older, who have completed orientation in the use of gym equipment are welcome to train on their own.

At this time there will be no in person training sessions for athletes under the age of 12.

Establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy membership experience remains our top priority.  In all of our planning and preparations we are following all CDC, local, state, and government guidance. We will follow guidelines, mandates and recommendations from the local health agencies & CDC. We are exploring all challenges, options, protocols, and health practices that factor into our ability to deliver  programs safely.

Because this situation is constantly changing, we are continually working and updating our procedures. Some of the new procedures include:

  • Everyone entering the Y  will be screened prior to the start of each day to ensure they are healthy. Anyone exhibiting a fever of 100.4 or higher or other symptoms of illness will not be permitted to enter the Y.
  • Guest & Nationwide Y Membership privileges have been temporarily suspend.
  • We will encourage more frequent hand-washing.
  • We will require that members clean the equipment both before and after each use.
  • We are carving out additional cleaning breaks during the day to allow for extra cleaning in our branches.
  • We have re-arranged equipment and taken some equipment out of service to adhere to the physical distancing recommendations and expect all members to maintain a six-foot distance from other members while using the Y.
  • We have taken several steps to minimize your contact with frequently touched surfaces or items that cannot be sanitized:
    • We have removed all lobby & locker room furniture.
    • We have removed some small fitness equipment.
    • We have removed magazines and literature throughout the building.
    • Our Lost & Found will be emptied each night.
    • Water fountains will be bottle-fill only.
    • All interior doors that can be propped open will remain open.

While the Y will certainly look different, our team is working hard to create a safe experience within the new parameters so that everyone can still safely enjoy the Y.

Your safety is our number one priority and we will continue to adjust to the guidelines and protocols recommended by the CDC and our local health agencies.

We will be keeping you updated on key decisions regarding changes to our programming and safety protocols. We ask for your patience as processes change accordingly.

If the YMCA identifies a swimmer or coach who tests positive for COVID-19 or we learn they are positive, we will take the following steps: 

  • The YMCA will immediately notify local health officials.
  • The YMCA will inform those who have had close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19 to stay home and self-monitor for symptoms and to follow CDC guidance if symptoms develop.
    • If a person does not have symptoms, CDC guidance for home isolation should be followed.
  • This initial short-term time allows the local health officials to gain a better understanding of the COVID-19 situation impacting the Y and for custodial staff to clean and disinfect the affected facilities.
  • The Y will work with the local health officials to determine appropriate next steps, including whether an extended dismissal duration is needed to stop or slow the further spread of COVID-19.
  • The affected areas will be closed for 24 hours, then thoroughly disinfected before using it again.

In the case of a confirmed case, the CDC recommends the swimmer or coach not return until: 

  • Authorization by a medical professional OR at least 72 hours have passed since recovery, which is defined as resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications
  • AND at least 14 days have passed since symptoms first appeared OR receipt of a negative COVID-19 test.
